Organized by artist and art writer Rachel TonThat, it borrows its name from the classic French comic strip about an asteroid whose pocket dimension houses innumerable worlds. The project emphasizes collaborative learning, artist to artist support systems, and material and conceptual experimentation.

Airtight Garage is fiscally sponsored through Givinga Foundation, a 501(c)3 non profit, and has received support from Collective Futures Fund, ECCF Creative County, and Mass Cultural Council.
